Homemade Bread Pudding With Bourbon Sauce Recipe

Do you have some stale bread you’re about to throw out? Hold your horses! Here is a delicious homemade bread pudding with a bourbon sauce recipe that makes a great dessert. It’s sure to be a big hit with the entire family.

According to Food Timeline.org, the making of bread pudding dates back for centuries and was popular all over the world. It was a great way of using old, stale bread to make it last and feed your family. It was often referred to as a “poor man’s pudding”

There are many versions of bread pudding from different parts of the world. Each having different flavors because they are made with spices unique to that area. There are ever “savory” versions of bread pudding that are not sweet and are served as, or with, the main meal.

Fast forward several hundred years and many of us are still enjoying this delicious recipe. Whenever we have any kind of stale bread, hamburger or hot dog bun, or stale dinner rolls we never throw them out. We wrap them up tightly and put them in the freezer. We use this bread in our turkey stuffing recipe, our stuffed flank steak recipe, and of course this delicious homemade bread pudding recipe. Our last batch of bread pudding had some of our homemade malt bread in it. It was perfect in the bread pudding.

This recipe may have been considered a “poor man’s pudding” at one time, but certainly not today. This recipe is “rich” in flavor and history and is sure to be enjoyed by everyone. Give it a try.

Bread Pudding With Bourbon Sauce
Ingredients
  • 6-7 C coarsely chopped bread
  • ¾ C brown sugar
  • ½ tsp cloves
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 6 eggs beaten
  • 1 C heavy cream
  • 1 ½ C milk
  • ¼ C butter melted
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2-3 T Jack Daniel’s Bourbon
  • 1 Cup raisins Optional
Bread Pudding Bourbon Sauce
    Ingredients:
    • ½ C . butter
    • 1 ½ C brown sugar
    • ½ tsp salt
    • 1 C heavy cream
    • 2-3 T Jack Daniels Bourbon
    • 1 tsp vanilla paste or extract
    Instructions
    Bread Pudding Directions:
    1. Preheat the oven to 325° F.
    2. Put bread cubes into a large buttered casserole dish.
    3. In a large bowl, combine the brown sugar, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. Add eggs (beat), cream, milk, melted butter, vanilla and Jack Daniels. Whisk until blended.
    4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes and mix gently. Sprinkle the top with brown sugar (Optional: pecans).
    5. Place uncovered in 325° oven and bake for 40 to 50 minutes until done (test with toothpick).
    Bread Pudding Bourbon Sauce
      Directions:
      1. In heavy pan, melt butter, add brown sugar and salt, stir until dissolved. Slowly add cream and blend well. Remove from heat. Add the Jack Daniels Bourbon and vanilla and mix well.
      2. Serve over Bread Pudding.
